Historical Timeline of St. George Parish


C. 1910 – first Catholic families arrive in Newnan, Mansour’s, Carrasco’s, Normans; traveled to Atlanta, Griffin, and LaGrange for Mass


1938 – Taft Mansour delegated to petition Bishop for priest to come to Newnan

1938 – First mass said in Newnan at Mansour home on Clark St.; Visiting priests continued for ten years.

1940 – Women’s Altar Society and Holy Name Society formed


1945 – First spaghetti supper

1947 – Began having masses at Virginia and Swinton House hotel dining rooms.


1950 – Assigned to Redemptorists Priests as mission of Griffin, Sacred Heart Church;

            First priest officially assigned.

1952 – New church on Jackson St. dedicated; became St. George

1955 – First bake sale held


1961 – First Parish Picnic held

1968 – Contract for Roscoe Road location signed, priest began living on property

1969 – New church dedicated


1974 – St. George becomes a parish church and assigned to Redemptorist priests


1981 – Legion of Mary formed.

1987 – Stained glass windows installed


1992 – Parish administration entrusted to priests of the Archdiocese of Atlanta; Msgr. Leo Herbert named

Pastor; no longer run by the Redemptorist Order.

1993 – First Deacon assigned

1994 – First nun assigned, St. Bridget Henderson, DRE

1994 – First St. George Day celebration

1997 – Hall Built

1998 – Hall dedicated and named for St. Bridget

1999 – First Spanish Mass said


2001 – First Parochial Vicar assigned (Spanish)

2002 – Fr. Austin Fogarty named Pastor

2012 – Fr. Henry Atem named Pastor
